Are You Ready for This? #2

Are You Ready for This? #2

(A Message to the Multitude)

(Preached Sunday Morning, September 27, 2020)

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

(Matthew 11:28)

Introduction

According to an article in the L.A. Times, entitled, “California COVID-19 hospitalizations could jump 89% in next month amid signs of coronavirus spread”

“California’s hospitals can handle the patient volume — at its peak in July, more than 7,100 people were hospitalized due to COVID-19. But October marks the start of the flu season, adding an additional layer of concern, Ghaly said.

“We’ve never done COVID hospitalizations with flu hospitalizations, and … we see things coming together that we want to make sure we’re very vigilant around, to ensure that even if we go up a little bit with our hospitalizations, we don’t continue to have high rates and even come close to the numbers that we saw over the summer,” he said.

“He urged people to wear face coverings, avoid gathering with people from outside their households and get flu shots.” (mla cite needed)

A website page provided by staff members of the L.A. Times called “Tracking the Coronavirus in California” provides the following figures and comments, which it shows to be updated this morning, today, Sept. 27, at 8:43 a.m. (PST):

  • “807,520 confirmed cases”

  • “69 more deaths [so far] today, [this morning]”

  • “3,360 deaths yesterday”

  • “15,587 deaths [total so far, in California alone]”

  • “None yet today”

  • “51 [deaths] yesterday”

“The COVID-19 pandemic has spread rapidly across California. Experts say the true number of people infected is unknown and likely much higher than official tallies.

“To better understand the spread of the virus, The Times is conducting an independent, continual survey of dozens of local health agencies across the state. So far today, two of the 61 agencies have reported new numbers.”

“What we know

  1. Officials point to positive signs. State and local officials see signs of hope in the recent drops in new cases and hospitalizations.
  2. The death toll keeps climbing. The state has averaged 85.9 deaths per day over the last seven days.
  3. Fewer tests are coming back positive. The statewide positivity rate has decreased to 2.9%.
  4. Most of the state is still on lockdown. The governor’s new system rates 25 counties as too risky to reopen. Together they’re home to 56% of the population.
  5. Disparities in age and race persist. Roughly 74% of the dead were 65 or older. After adjusting for population, Latinos are now 3.4 times more likely than whites to test positive.” (give mla)

There is a popular hymn, which we, here, enjoyed listening to before this message was given. It starts out like this.

Jesus is the answer

For the world today.

Above Him there’s no other,

Jesus is the Way!

I. Is Jesus the solution?

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)

     A. “Come”

     B. “Unto”

     C. “Me”

II. Are you the problem?

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)

     A. All should come to Jesus.

     B. All who “labor” should have come to Jesus.

     C. All who “are heavy laden” should come to Jesus, now!

III. Are you the “few” who will have their problem solved?

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)

     A. The world will never find rest without Jesus!

“Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:” (Matthew 7:13)

     B. You will never find rest without Jesus!

“Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.” (Matthew 7:14)

     C. God provides rest in Jesus, only!

“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” (John 14:6)

Conclusion

“Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.” (Matthew 11:29)

“For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:30)
