(Mid-week message for House Church and individual use: preached 8/29 – 9/4/2021)

“My soul shall make her boast in the Lord: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad.”

(Psalm 34:2)

Introduction

Are you humble? Surrender to what you will now hear and – in 5 minutes, you will “be glad.”

And now you know what God means when he inspired these words,  “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” (2 Corinthians 5:17)

I. A new way

“Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.” (Matthew 11:29)

II. A new wonder

“Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.” (Matthew 11:29)

III. A new world

“Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.” (Matthew 11:29)

IV. A new work

“Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.” (Matthew 11:29)

Conclusion: A new creation in Christ Jesus

For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:30)

And now you know what God means when he inspired these words,  “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” (2 Corinthians 5:17)

A. Commentaries

Our dear brothers have this to say about the sentiment given in Psalm 34:2:

     1. J. Vernon McGee

“[This] attitude [is] a testimony for the Lord.” (McGee, J. Vernon. “The Book of Isaiah.” The Ryrie Study Bible: New American Standard Bible, Thomas Nelson Publishers, 1982, p. 733.)

     2. John MacArthur

34:2 This is proper boasting because of the only proper object, God himself (cf Jer 9:23-24) (MacArthur, John. “The Psalms.” The MacArthur Study Bible, Personal Size, English Standard Version (ESV), Crossway, 2010, pp. 763.)

     3. Moody Bible Institute

“He will make his boast in the Lord not in anything he has accomplished (cf. Ps 44:8; Jr 9:23-24; 1 Cor 1:31). As  a result, when others hear it, they will rejoice. Then they will magnify the Lord and exalt His name with [you].” (Rydelnik, Michael, and Michael Vanlaningham. “Commentary on Psalms.” The Moody Bible Commentary, Moody Publishers, 2014, p. 790.)

     4. Adam Clark, Primitive Methodist’s premier commentator

“Verse 2. My soul shall make her boast] Shall set itself to praise the Lord – Shall consider this its chief work.” (Clark, Adam. “St. Psalm XXIV, Verse 2.” The New Testament of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ: Carefully Printed from the Most Correct Copies of the Present Authorized Translation, Including the Marginal Readings and Parallel Texts: with a Commentary and Critical Notes; Designed as a Help to a Better Understanding of the Sacred Writings [the Title of This Book Is Now More Commonly Referred to as “Clarke’s Commentary”, Volume II: Job to Malachi. Abingdon, p. 327.)

     5. Matthew Henry

“Those have most comfort in God’s mercies, both to others and to themselves, that are humble, and have the least confidence in their own merit and sufficiency.” (Henry, Matthew. “An Exposition, with Practical Observations, of the Book of Psalms.” Matthew Henry’s Commentary on the Whole Bible, 6th ed., vol. 3, Hendrickson Publishers Marketing, LLC, 1991, p. 290.)

     6. Charles Spurgeon (quoting Sir Richard Baker)

Verse 2. – “My soul shall make her boast in the Lord.”  Not like the boasting of the Pharisee, so hateful in the eyes of God, so offensive in the ears of the humble; for the humble can hear this boasting and be glad, which they would never do if it were not conformable to the rules of humility.  Can any boasting be greater than to say, “I can do all things”?  Yet in this boasting there is humility when I add, “In him that strengtheneth me.” For though God likes not of boasting, yet he likes of this boasting, which arrogates nothing to ourselves, but ascribes all to him. – Sir Richard Baker.” (Spurgeon, Charles H. “Exposition of the Psalms: Psalm the Thirty-fourth.” The Treasury of David, Containing an Original Exposition of the Book of Psalms; a Collection of Illustrative Extracts from the Whole Range of Literature; a Series of Homiletical Hints upon Almost Every Verse; and Lists of Writers upon Each Psalm, Volume One: Psalm I to LVII, Hendrickson Publishers, p. 128.)

B. Bible: Scripture compared with Scripture

Now, since God is the ultimate authority on his own Word, here is what the Bible has to say about these confirmed truths.

     1. My soul shall make her boast in the Lord: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad.” (Psalm 34:2)

  • “Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:29-30)

     2. “My soul shall make her boast in the Lord: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad.” (Psalm 34:2)

  • “Now I Paul myself beseech you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ, who in presence am base among you, but being absent am bold toward you:” (2 Corinthians 10:1)

     3. “My soul shall make her boast in the Lord: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad.” (Psalm 34:2)

  • “The meek also shall increase their joy in the Lord, and the poor among men shall rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.” (Isaiah 29:19)

C. Bible: Scripture references commonly used for Psalm 34:2

     1. “That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.” (1 Corinthians 1:31)

     2. “Thus saith the Lord,

  • Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom
  • neither let the mighty man glory in his might,
  • let not the rich man glory in his riches but
  • let him that glorieth glory in this
    • that he understandeth and knoweth me,
    • that I am the Lord which exercise
      • lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth:
      • for in these things I delight, saith the Lord.“ (Jeremiah 9:23-24)

     3. “They that fear thee will be glad when they see me; because I have hoped in thy word.” (Psalm 119:74)
