THE S.A.L.T. COMMUNITY HUB INITIATIVE

Ending Silos, Rebuilding Communities, and Reducing Homelessness

Hello! My name is Abel Prudhomme, Founder and Executive Director of the S.A.L.T. I am also the LA County Faith-Based Regional Coordinator. Today, I am excited to share with you our S.A.L.T. Community Hubs Initiative.

Our mission is to eradicate homelessness by rebuilding broken communities in our inner cities through faith-based partnerships.

A major cause of homelessness is the erosion of community support systems in our inner cities. Faith organizations play a central role in bringing communities together and delivering services. Yet, they often work in silos without being connected to the broader system of resources.

To address this gap, the SALT has partnered with churches to host five resource fairs, connecting over 50 social service agencies to 200 individuals needing assistance. We have received several testimonies regarding those who are now being helped!

“Praise report! The widowed woman in our congregation that you helped us with has now been housed and received wrap-around services.”
– Chris Waters, Head Chairwoman, Commission on Missions & Welfare, First African Methodist Episcopalian Church

In addition, through our quarterly roundtables, the SALT is facilitating partnerships within the faith community. To date, we are working with over 180 faith organizations and over 150 social service agencies.

By leveraging these relationships, we are establishing S.A.L.T. Community Hubs, connecting residents, faith partners, and social service agencies. Our ultimate goal is to establish faith-based Community Development Centers throughout Compton and South L.A.

As confirmed in a recent study, “for every additional dollar spent by CDCs, U.S. cities will show a decrease in the unemployment rate, percentage of vacant housing, and the number of people living below poverty.”

Our model is inspired by the Underground Network, which began in Tampa, Florida, and is expanding nationwide. Our vision is to raise $1 million. As a start, we are asking for your support to fund three months of operations for our first Hub.
