HOW TO GET IT ALL
(A Message to the Multitude)
(Preached Sunday Morning, May 24, 2020)
Please turn with me in your Bible to the Gospel of John, chapter six, verse forty (John 6:40).
As you find the page, in your Bible, that John 6:40 is on, let me tell you a story… about Jesus.
The best way, of course, to hear a story is to put yourself in it. Do so, and allow me to tell you about the character that you play.
You, your family and everyone you know have lived in the city all your life: one of the largest cities of the world. You have struggled to get ahead but you often failed. It is now a time in your life when you wonder if you will ever make it, although, as you know you must, you will get up tomorrow morning and try again.
But somehow, somewhat suddenly, you have heard about this person, this Jesus. He has done great things for people, at least that’s what you’ve been told. He has healed them, delivered them from a wasted useless life. He has given them hope and purpose. They, though still going to work just like you – some nearby, who you see every day, and some that you have only heard of – they are happy! Their lives appear to be full of joy. Yes, they are fulfilled. They are satisfied. You can’t quite see how but still you can tell that, despite no apparent gain of money, no rise of fame or prestige, these people have, at least inside of them, something you have always wanted. Success!
And so, you go with them to hear what they are hearing. To maybe meet this man, Jesus. To know more about him. To actually see what he can do.
You don’t think you need to be healed of anything. You believe yourself to be well put together. But that intangible something… That nagging feeling within… That innermost knowledge that your life, even though you might gain all you could in this world, in the end, at that day, yes at that moment of your death and (dare you think it?) there beyond, if what you have heard is true: You will be judged.
You will stand before a holy God, stripped of worldly gatherings; sinful and without excuse: judged, sentenced, condemned, cast out into… what did that Bible verse you once heard say,
“… the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone; which is the second death.” (Revelation 21:8c)
And so, you have come, and you have sat, possibly in a live congregation with others, or alone with a recording of this message. You have come and you are here, and we do now open the Word of God to you, and allow it to speak its powerful words here, in John 6:40 where the very words formed with the voice of Jesus himself says this.
“And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.”
(John 6:40)
What word’s he declares! What message is this? Let us look deeper into the depths of this truth, for within one such drop from the mouth of God you shall discover…
