“It Is Finished!”

“It Is Finished!”

(A Message to the Multitude)

(Preached Sunday Evening, June 14, 2020)

When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

(John 19:30)

Today, we bring you great news – good news! The word “Gospel” means “good news”, and as was declared that holy night in which Jesus was born, we bring you “good tidings of great joy!” (Luke 2:10)

Where is this wonderful news? What happy words declare it? What joyous occasion marks its commencement and it’s now never ending fulfillment?

These. These words.

When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.” (John 19:30)

These. Yes, these, the last words of Jesus on the cross. A dead man, before he died, uttered those words.

Does it matter? Does it all somehow affect you?

Jesus himself must explain himself. God, the God of the Universe through the Word of God must explain himself. And so we go to the Bible to have the Bible explain the clear meaning of these words. And so we go again… to Jesus .

Yes, Jesus had explained to the people what would happen at the very moment of his death long before it ever occured.

Please turn in your Bible to John 10:14-18.

14 I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.

15 As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep.

16 And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.

17 Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again.

18 No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.

(John 10:14-18)

When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.” (John 19:30)

“The drink here is not the same as the “wine . . . mixed with gall” offered to Him as He arrived at Golgotha (Mt. 27:34) which was intended to lessen the pain. The purpose of this cheap, sour wine (cf. Mk. 15:36) was to prolong life and increse the torture.” (Macarthur, John. MacArthur Study Bible : New International Version. Nashville, Tn., Thomas Nelson, 2013, p. 1614. Comment on John 19:29.)

I. He said, “It is finished!”

When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.” (John 19:30)

II. He bowed his head before God and man!

When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.” (John 19:30)

III. He gave up the ghost!

When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.” (John 19:30)

Conclusion:

It is finished!’ Receipts for taxes found in the papyri have written across them this single Greek word, which means ‘paid in full.’ The price for our redemption from sin [for your redemption] was paid in full by our lord’s death.” (Charles Caldwell Ryrie. Ryrie Study Bible : New American Standard Bible. Chicago, Moody Publishers, 2012, p. 1334. Comment on John 19:30).
