Rise Up Superhero, and Save Your World!
(Sunday message for House Church and individual use: preached 2/7 – 2/13/2021)
“Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.”
(2 Timothy 3:5)
Introduction
According to AboutLeaders.com,
“In comic books and movies, the superhero always comes to possess some incredible power or skill, and he must decide whether to use it for domination or for the public good.” (Wilson, Edgar. “Where Does Power Come From?” AboutLeaders, 4 Sept. 2019, aboutleaders.com/where-does-power-come-from/#gs.su789i.)
I. We have had a form of godliness!
“Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.” (2 Timothy 3:5)
A. We showed you a “form” of who God is.
“There is no fear of God before their eyes.” (Romans 3:18)
B. We showed you a “form” of what God’s Word is.
“Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.” (Galatians 3:24)
C. We showed you a “form” of who you are.
“There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.” (Proverbs 16:25)
II. We have denied the true power of that form of godliness!
“Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.” (2 Timothy 3:5)
A. We denied the power of God.
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.” (Proverbs 9:10)
B. We denied the power of God’s Word.
“For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God.” (Acts 20:27)
C. We denied you the truth about yourself.
“They have healed also the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace.” (Jeremiah 6:14)
“For they have healed the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace.” (Jeremiah 8:11)
III. You must turn away from our form of God-denying religion!
“Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.” (2 Timothy 3:5)
A. Turn away and fear the true God.
“For our God is a consuming fire.” (Hebrews 12:29)
B. Turn away and hear the truth of God’s whole Word.
“Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;” (Ephesians 6:14)
“And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:” (Ephesians 6:17)
“For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12)
C. Turn away and hear the entire truth about yourself.
“And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.” (Luke 16:23)
“Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father’s house: for I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.” (Luke 16:27-28)
Conclusion
Isaiah 40: 29-31:
29 He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength.
30 Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall:
31 But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”
- “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.” (Romans 1:16)
- “For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.” (1 Corinthians 1:18)
- “And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.” (Matthew 28:18)
- “Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: and whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?” (John 11:25-26)
- “And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.” (John 12:32)
