The Beginning and the End

(Sunday message for House Church and individual use: preached 11/14 – 11/20/2021)

I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.”

(Revelation 1:8)

Introduction: Just as the Word of God begins and ends with Jesus, so also does this age begin and end with him.

“I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord,” (Revelation 1:8)

“In many parts, and many ways, God of old having spoken to the fathers in the prophets, in these last days did speak to us in a Son [“his Son” according to the KJV, ESV & NASB], whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He did make the ages;” (Hebrews 1:1-2, YLT)

I. Jesus “is!”

“I am … , saith the Lord, which is,” (Revelation 1:8)

  • “And God said unto Moses, I Am That I Am: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I Am hath sent me unto you.” (Exodus 3:14)
  • “Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.” (John 8:58)

II. Jesus “was!”

“I am … , saith the Lord, which was,” (Revelation 1:8)

  • “Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.” (John 17:24)

III. Jesus “is to come!”

“I am … , saith the Lord, which is to come,” (Revelation 1:8)

  • “For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.” (Matthew 23:39)

IV. Jesus “is … the Almighty!”

“Alas for the day! for the day of the Lord is at hand, and as a destruction from the Almighty shall it come.” (Joel 1:15)

“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6)

  • He is your only constant!

Definition of the word constant: “Occurring continuously over a period of time.”

“Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.” Hebrews 13:8)

  • He is your only salvation!

“The woman saith unto him, ‘I know that Messias [Savior] cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things.’ Jesus saith unto her, ‘I that speak unto thee am he.” (John 4:25-26)

  • He is the end of fear everlasting – if you believe on him!

“So when they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing nigh unto the ship: and they were afraid. But he saith unto them, ‘It is I; be not afraid.” (John 6:19-20)

  • He is the beginning of fear everlasting – if you don’t!

“I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.” (John 8:24)

  • He is the one that was lifted up for you!

“Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things.” (John 8:28)

  • He said that he would give his life for you!

“Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am he.” (John 13:19)

  • … And he did!

Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, ‘Whom seek ye?”

“They answered him, ‘Jesus of Nazareth.’ Jesus saith unto them, ‘I am he.’ And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them.” (John 18:4-5)

Reading from Revelation 1:8:

“The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John: who bare record of the word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, and of all things that he saw. Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand. John to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace be unto you, and peace, from him which is, and which was, and which is to come; and from the seven Spirits which are before his throne; and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood, and hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen. Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.”

(Revelation 1:1‭-‬8 KJV)

Reading from Matthew Henry, Volume 6, pg. 341, on Revelation 1:1-8

“This account of Christ is ratified and confirmed by himself, v. 8. Here our Lord Jesus justly challenges the same honour and power that is ascribed to the Father, v. 4. He is the beginning and the end; all things are from him and for him; he is the Almighty; he is the same eternal and unchangeable one. And surely whoever presumes to blot out one character of this name of Christ deserves to have his name blotted out of the book of life. Those that honour him he will honour; but those who despise him shall be lightly esteemed.”
