The Salt and the City
(A Message to the Members)
(Preached Wednesday Evening,May 13, 2020)
“And the men of the city said unto Elisha, ‘Behold, I pray thee, the situation of this city is pleasant, as my lord seeth: but the water is naught, and the ground barren.’
“And he said, ‘Bring me a new cruse, and put salt therein. And they brought it to him.’
“And he went forth unto the spring of the waters, and cast the salt in there, and said, ‘Thus saith the Lord, I have healed these waters; there shall not be from thence any more death or barren land.’
“So the waters were healed unto this day, according to the saying of Elisha which he spake.”
(2 Kings 2:19-22)
We are in the Bible. The S.A.L.T.: The Savior’s Ambassadors Laboring Together. As our Lord Jesus said when he gave us our name; when he declared who we are; when He said, “Ye are the salt of the earth.”
I. Our Lord’s View of the City
“And the men of the city said unto Elisha, ‘Behold, I pray thee, the situation of this city is pleasant, as my lord seeth: but the water is naught, and the ground barren.” (2 Kings 2:19)
A. What the city could be.
B. What the churches had been.
C. What the people had become.
II. Our Lord’s Vision of the City
“And he said, ‘Bring me a new cruse, and put salt therein. And they brought it to him.” (2 Kings 2:20)
A. He commands us to bring a fresh new approach to the work!
B. He commands us to put in people who are the “salt of the earth!”
C. He commands us to then bring the new work & the salt… to Him!
III. Our Lord’s Victory in the City
“And he went forth unto the spring of the waters, and cast the salt in there, and said, ‘Thus saith the Lord, I have healed these waters; there shall not be from thence any more death or barren land.” (2 Kings 2:21)
A. Our Lord will then go “forth unto the spring of the waters.”
B. Our Lord will then “cast the salt in there.”
C. Our Lord will then say, “Thus saith the Lord.”
Conclusion:
- “So the waters were healed unto this day, according to the saying of Elisha which he spake.” (2 Kings 2:22)
- “And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it, saying, ‘If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes. For the days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side, and shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation.” (Luke 19:41-44)
- “Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.” (Matthew 5:13)
