How to Get Rid of All of Your Problems… TODAY!
(Sunday message for House Church and individual use: preached 03/21 – 3/27/2021)
“Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.”
(Isaiah 53:4)
Introduction
“And they went to a place called Gethsemane. And he said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 And he took with him Peter and James and John, and began to be greatly distressed and troubled. 34 And he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death. Remain here and watch.” (Mark 14:32-34, ESV)
“14:33 Troubled. The Greek word refers to a feeling of terrified amazement. In the face of the dreadful prospect of bearing God’s full fury against sin, Jesus was in the grip of terror.” (MacArthur, John. “Mark 14.” The MacArthur Study Bible, Personal Sized, English Standard Version (ESV), Crossway, 2010, p. 1458.)
- He who never sinned now felt the effects of sin unthinkably, as all of our sin was placed on Him.
- He was literally beneath the weight of every sin that had ever been or ever would be enacted! Yes… your sin too!
- Let’s come back to this in a moment, and first examine two things.
I. He bore all of our griefs!
“Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.” (Isaiah 53:4)
“14:33 Troubled. The Greek word refers to a feeling of terrified amazement. In the face of the dreadful prospect of bearing God’s full fury against sin, Jesus was in the grip of terror.” (MacArthur)
II. He carried all of our sorrows!
III. He was cursed… for you!
“Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.” (Isaiah 53:4)
- He who never sinned now felt the effects of sin unthinkably, as all of our sin was placed on Him.
- He was literally beneath the weight of every sin that had ever been or ever would be enacted! Yes… your sin too!
Conclusion: “The cursed!” “Cursed!” “A curse!”
“For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.” (Galatians 3:10)
“Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:” (Galatians 3:13)
I challenge you to show even one verse of Scripture, in all of the Bible, that says that God the Father’s wrath fell upon Jesus, God the Son!
This would be as close as it gets in Scripture:
“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.” (Romans 5:8-9)
He was judged, in your place! There was no wrath from God the Father towards God the Son for paying for your sin! (If anything, God would have loved him that much more.) There was payment! There was judgement! There was propitiation: Jesus taking your place and paying for your sins!!
