What DID Jesus Do? (Not What Would Jesus Do?)

What DID Jesus Do? (Not What Would Jesus Do?)

(Sunday message for House Church and individual use: preached 11/21 – 11/28/2021)

“For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:”

(1 Peter 2:21)

Introduction: It is NOT what WOULD Jesus do?

“We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:” (2 Peter 1:19)

I. Jesus is Jesus.

“For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:” (1 Peter 2:21)

  • “For ye have the poor always with you; but me ye have not always.” (Matthew 26:11)
  • “Behold, in this thou art not just: I will answer thee, that God is greater than man.” (Job 33:12)
  • “The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here.” (Matthew 12:41)
  • “For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.” (Matthew 24:5)
  • “He said unto them, But whom say ye that I am? Peter answering said, The Christ of God.” (Luke 9:20)

II. Jesus gave his life to save sinners.

“For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:” (1 Peter 2:21)

  • “And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.” (Mark 12:31)
  • “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.” (John 13:34-35)
  • “This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:12-14)

III. Jesus is our example.

“For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:” (1 Peter 2:21)

  • “And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” (Matthew 4:19)
  • Jesus said unto him, ‘Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment.” (Matthew 22:37-38)
  • “And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left.” (Isaiah 30:21)

Conclusion: “Follow his steps.”

“For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:” (1 Peter 2:21)

The following are 10 times that the Lord Jesus Christ commands you to “Follow me!”

  1. “And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” (Matthew 4:19)
  2. “The day following Jesus would go forth into Galilee, and findeth Philip, and saith unto him, Follow me.” (John 1:43)
  3. “But Jesus said unto him, Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead.” (Matthew 8:22)
  4. “And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the receipt of custom, and said unto him, Follow me. And he arose and followed him.” (Mark 2:14)
  5. “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:” (John 10:27)
  6. “Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.” (Matthew 16:24)
  7. “Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.” (Matthew 19:21)
  8. “If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.” (Matthew 4:19)
  9. “This spake he, signifying by what death he should glorify God. And when he had spoken this, he saith unto him, Follow me.” (John 21:19)
  10. “Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me.” (John 21:22)

She had watched him from childhood. She had seen how this whole thing works. She was there before all the other disciples and above all else, she knew that there was and is one important thing that all of us have to do: “Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.”

  • “His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.” (John 2:5)
  • “And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?” (Luke 6:46)
